Materials Scientist

David is a Materials Scientist based in our Cardiff office.

David Jones is an experienced metallurgist with a Masters degree in Metallurgy from the University of Oxford. David began his career as a quality control metallurgist in the steel and wire industry, moving on to research and development within the same company. David was the project leader on a number of high profile projects including the design and implementation of the electric arc furnace energy inputs programme.

With considerable experience in quality control and troubleshooting he joined the Royal Mint as Technical Manager, Circulating Coin, where he was responsible for the technical management of all equipment within the division; including melting, continuous casting, strip rolling, coin blanking, coin rimming and refractories. He was also responsible for all trials and developments on this equipment.

David joined MTD in 2009 to further his interest in the investigation of metallurgical failures. He conducts a wide range of such investigations, particularly in the energy and marine sectors. Recent investigations include the failures of offshore flexible pipelines and end fittings, sour gas process facilities, offshore coating systems, steam turbines and turbine blades and water heating pipelines.
