MTD is regularly approached by Underwriters, P&I Clubs, Shipowners and the Legal Profession to advise on the storage and transportation of solid fuels, such as coal and coke, all over the World. We have also assisted with quality and shortage issues.

Our input has ensured the safe transport of many types of coal by avoiding heating. We contributed to the research into the early detection of spontaneous heating during the ocean carriage of coals in bulk. It was found the measurement of carbon monoxide levels provided an early indication of spontaneous heating. This method of detection is now recommended by I.M.O. and the Australian Maritime Authority.

Our modern and specialist laboratories are equipped to offer extensive analytical services and testing in accordance with relevant standard test procedures.

Our procedures are approved by UKAS, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. We regularly prepare and analyse solid fuel samples to determine quality for Receivers. These analyses ensure the fuels meet sales specifications thus avoiding substantial penalties.

We specialise in the analysis of Biomass and Refuge Derived Fuel (RDF), etc., including testing for calorific value, moisture, halides, ash and sulphur. For further information please visit our Renewable Energy page.
