Technician (Sampling) - Solid Fuel Laboratory - Cardiff

Contract Type

2 year with option of extension [37½ hrs / week plus occasional overtime]


Job Description

We are looking for a candidate with attention to detail, reliable and maturity. The role will involve visiting clients’ sites to collect samples to be brought back to site for analysis. Assisting in the day-to-day running of the laboratories undertaking a variety of tasks. Sample preparation involving using grinding, milling and drying processes. Preference will be given to those having previous experience of working within industrial, laboratory or manufacturing environments. Must hold a full car driving license. A safety passport (CCNSG or similar) is desirable. A good, physical demeanour will assist greatly with sampling at client’s site and carrying bulk samples. Must be able to work unsociable hours occasionally (on occasions shift work which may involving 12-hour nights).


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. On-site sampling.

2. On-site testing.

3. Collection/delivery of samples etc in the company van.

4. Preparing samples for other analysts.

5. Simple routine analysis following suitable in-house training.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

1. Undertake on-site sampling, inspection and laboratory investigation as necessary to provide adequate services to clients. This will include some out of hours shift working at evenings and weekends. The exact day/time may be liable to change at short notice.

2. Sample preparation such as grinding, milling, drying, extracting, etc of all sample types but with particular emphasis for solid fuel samples.

3. Collection and/or delivery in a company vehicle of samples/chemical/etc to other MTD premises, test houses or clients, etc.

4. Expedite procedures established for internal quality assurance purposes to UKAS ISO 17025.

5. Be conversant with the operation of equipment and undertake maintenance and minor repairs as authorised.

6. Maintain laboratory safety and security practices. 7. To undertake any other duties as appropriate.
