Job Title: Water Section Laboratory Manager

Position: Permanent [ M- F 37½ hrs/week]
Introduction
We have an opportunity for an experienced Microbiologist/Chemist to play a key role in our dynamic and varied testing division, to act as laboratory manager of our food and water laboratory. This will involve overseeing the day-to-day running of the section to achieve the prompt provision of high-quality scientific services in the microbiological and chemical testing of waters, preparing test certificates, overseeing staff training and maintaining laboratory equipment and ISO 17025 accreditation. Provision of scientific advice, generating and maintaining income streams, managing enquiries and quotations for work through regular and effective liaison with existing and potential clients; Trade, Local Authorities and Consultancy division.
The position is based at our Cardiff laboratory complex.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret results, report findings and prepare certificates ensuring their compliance with the appropriate test method and accreditation requirements.
- Undertake microbiological and chemical analysis in support of other staff.
- To plan detailed analyses for each job, select methods of analysis, and identify particular quality control requirements.
- Carry out validation of instruments/methods where necessary.
- Implement new test methods and oversee the participation in collaborative trials, round robins etc.
- Undertake literature searches for methods and technical review of methods for consultants.
- Oversee training of staff and assist with the coordination of staffing resources for analyses.
- Undertake delegated administrative duties as assigned for the day-to-day functioning of the laboratory.
- To collaborate with the Public Analysts in coordinating and managing food testing and reporting to Trade
Skills & Qualifications Required:
- Degree qualification in Microbiology/Chemistry or appropriate work.
- Previous minimum 2 years experience in a Team Leader/Supervisor role in a microbiology/water chemistry ISO 17025 laboratory
- Experienced in the interpretation of results, producing certificates and report findings to client.
- Familiarity with the routine testing of water microbiology testing (i.e. pour plates; membrane filtration; spread plates; colony counting; endotoxin: etc.) and water chemistry testing (i.e. colorimetry; pH; conductivity; IC; ICP: etc.)
- Previous experience of implementing new standard test methods in a laboratory and using non-standard procedures for investigative purposes.
- Experience of maintaining and overseeing quality control systems within a water laboratory setting; experience with ISO 17025 and of managing corrective actions from audits is essential.
- Experience of managing laboratory equipment procurement and instrument calibration.
- Excellent communication skills, both written reports and in meetings with clients.
- Highly motivated, can-do attitude.
