Job Title: Principal Analyst, Instrument Laboratory

Position: Permanent (M – F, 37½ hrs/week)
Job Description
To act as a laboratory scientist in the Minton, Treharne & Davies Instrumental laboratory in Cardiff. This will involve performing analysis on various matrices but significant proportion of oil and petrochemical samples following International Standard and in-house test procedures and entering test results on to laboratory LIMS system, whilst ensuring the laboratory complies with ISO 17025 requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake analysis on various sample matrices, interpret results and enter results into laboratory LIMS system, in line with instructions by laboratory managers and in line with requirements of the laboratory standard ISO 17025.
- Prepare draft reports and certificates of analysis.
- Undertake such investigative analysis as is directed to provide adequate evidential
support for clients’ purposes. - To participation in collaborative trials, surveys, performance assessment, routine work
and to keep abreast of and advise on relevant analytical, equipment and systems
developments. - Undertake analytical and investigative work as required for the development of
analytical methods and provide an assessment of their suitability for use in Analytical
Services. - Perform calibrations and maintain equipment as instructed by laboratory management.
- Provide appropriate scientific and technical advice and develop contacts with all clients.
- Demonstrate compliance with all test methods, procedures and quality systems.
- To oversee the academic and professional training of all scientific staff and undertake delivery of training to staff and clients as necessary.
- Carry out validation of instruments/methods where necessary.
- Maintain organised systems of work for traceability and compliance with laboratory
accreditation.
Skills & Qualifications Required:
- Minimum Science Degree appropriate to the work in Chemistry.
- Minimum of 5 years post-graduation extensive experience in GC-MS Instrumentation
analysis. - Experience of Analytical Method development and validation.
- Experience of analysis in an petrochemical/ environmental/ food or related laboratory
would be beneficial - Familiarity with DSC, FTIR, GC, HPLC, IC, LC-MS, SEM-EDX, SPE , TGA would be
advantageous - Proficiency in Word, Excel and LIMS systems.
- Understanding of the significance of the tests being performed.
- Highly motivated, can do attitude.
